Born in Goulburn, New South Wales on 01 April 1927 and educated at Riverview (1936 - 1944), Fr Cowburn entered the Society of Jesus in February 1945.

He did philosophy at Loyola (1947 - 1949) and science (physics) at Melbourne University (1950 - 1953) and taught at St Patrick's, East Melbourne in Victoria and St Ignatius', Norwood in South Australia.

He did theology in Innsbruck, Austria (1955 - 1959) and was ordained there in July 1958.

His tertianship was at Paray-le-Monial, France (1959 - 1960) and doctoral studies (philosophy) in Louvain and Innsbruck.

He lectured in philosophy at Loyola 1963 - 1969.

Fr Cowburn who has been at JTC since 1972 [except for sabbaticals in New York and some years at the seminary in New Zealand (1977 - 1983)] has published three books:

  • Love and the Person (London: Geoffrey Chapman, 1967)
  • Shadows and the Dark (London: SCM, 1979)
  • Love (Milwaukee: Marquette, 2004).
