Since returning from graduate studies in Oxford in 1977, Brendan Byrne SJ has been Professor of New Testament at Jesuit Theological College, of which he was Principal (1992 - 1997).

He was Rector of Campion College, Kew (1979 - 1984) and a delegate to the 33rd General Congregation of the Society of Jesus in 1983.

He was a visiting professor at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome, Italy, in 1993 and has also taught in East Asia and East Africa. He was a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission (Rome, Italy) (1990 - 1996) and President of the Melbourne College of Divinity (2000 - 2001).

He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1999.

Brendan Byrne is the author of seven books, the most recent being:

  • Romans (Sacra Pagina Series; 1996)
  • The Hospitality of God: A Reading of Luke's Gospel (Collegeville: 2000)
  • a study of Matthew's Gospel entitled Lifting the Burden: Reading Matthew's Gospel in the Church Today.

Besides teaching within the United Faculty of Theology, he regularly gives workshops on scripture to clergy and parish communities, and edits the theological journal Pacifica.

He resides with the Manresa parish community at Hawthorn, Victoria of which he is presently superior.

Apart from enjoying the company of friends, for recreation he cycles in the Australian countryside and reads extensively in modern European history.
