Robin Koning SJ is the newest member of the JTC faculty, having completed his doctorate in Toronto, Canada in March 2005. There he studied at Regis College, the Jesuit college at the Toronto School of Theology, affiliated with the University of Toronto. He also assisted at the Newman Centre, the Catholic chaplaincy and parish in the heart of the university, and was involved with the L'Arche communities in the area. Robin's doctorate examined the understanding of culture proposed by American anthropologist Clifford Geertz in relation to the thought of Canadian theologian Bernard Lonergan. Robin was born in Brisbane and went to school with the Christian Brothers before joining the Society of Jesus in 1977. During his training, he taught at St Ignatius' College, Riverview and worked at St Mary's Parish, North Sydney. After ordination in 1991, Robin worked for six years as part of the Jesuit's northern community, involved in Aboriginal ministry. Most of that time was spent in the Kutjungka Catholic Parish of the south-east Kimberley area of Western Australia. He was based at Wirrumanu (Balgo) and working with the Kukatja, Walmajarri and Jaru peoples of that desert region. Robin is now living in one of the formation groups at the College and is teaching in the Systematic Theology department at the United Faculty of Theology, with occasional forays into Philosophy. His Aboriginal connections continue, particularly in his role as JTC liaison in the partnership between the Australian Jesuit Province and Nungalinya College, an Aboriginal theological college in Darwin. He enjoys the company of friends, cycling and music. |
