Nguyen Hoang Trung was born in Vietnam in 1974.

At the age of seven he left Vietnam with his family (Trung has one brother and two sisters) as one of the many thousands of boat people. After a two-day journey by sea, they finally reached Thailand where they were taken to the refugee camp. There they stayed for two years under impoverished conditions until his family was finally accepted as immigrants to Australia.

Trung and his family arrived in Adelaide, South Australia at the end of 1983 and he had his primary schooling and part of his secondary education there. The family moved to Brisbane, Queensland at the end of 1989 where he finished his secondary studies and went on to work in an apprenticeship. After four years he was a qualified Mechanic.

During these years of training, his father died and this had an enormous impact on his outlook on the meaning of life.

Feeling a vocation to do more with his own life, he began to contemplate a life devoted to God by serving others. Still uncertain of his vocation, he returned to Adelaide in 1999 and began theological study. Two great years in Adelaide helped to intensify and confirm his desires to live a life of service, which subsequently led him to the Society of Jesus.

In 2001 he entered the novitiate in Sydney, New South Wales, and there he lived for two years learning how to deepen his spiritual life through prayers, meditations and experiments that are part of the novitiate program.

In early 2003 he was admitted to First Vows and then moved to Melbourne to continue his theological studies while living at the Jesuit Theological College.

He has been doing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) through Monash University, enjoying life to the full, and is currently in Shanghai, China, doing a course in Chinese language. With this course, he will complete requirements for his BA. In 2006 for regency he taught at St Ignatius' College, Riverview in New South Wales. Trung then continued his regency by spending a year undertaking Chinese studies in Beijing, China. He is now back at JTC to complete his theological studies.
