	Tran Thanh Tan was born on 28 July 1978 in Da Nang, Vietnam. In June 2001, Tan completed a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Da Nang. He entered the Society of Jesus in Vietnam and took his first vows at Sacred Heart Novitiate on 31 May 2004. After spending three years studying philosophy in Saint Joseph Scholasticate in Thu Duc, Saigon, he came to Australia on 21 February 2007 and is studying theology at the Jesuit Theological College.
