Tyson was born in Mornington, southern Victoria, in 1977 and attended St Macartans Primary School and Padua College, both on the Mornington Peninsula.

His love for science led him to study in that field at the University of Melbourne for four years, doing an honours year in physical chemistry which included experimenting on particles for future computer chip technology.

Tyson had wanted to join the Society of Jesus since he was 14. In 2001 he entered the Jesuit novitiate, during which he worked in:

  • a hospice for alcoholic men,
  • a hospice for cancer and AIDS patients in Sydney,
  • a remote Aboriginal community in Western Australia, and
  • a Jesuit school in Adelaide.

He is now studying theology and philosophy at the Jesuit Theological College. For his regency in 2007-8 he is teaching at St Ignatius' College in Adelaide, South Australia.
